DBA team presents draft paper at scientific workshop in Ghana

On June 14th 2022, Prof. Dr. Philipp von Carlowitz and Dr. (des.) Simon Züfle participated in the national policy workshop “Development and Doing Business in Africa” at the University of Ghana in Accra.

We were more than delighted that Simon Züfle had the opportunity to present a draft paper on third market cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Sub-Saharan Africa at the workshop. In our research, we examine the general role of enterprises and the participation of non-Chinese enterprises in the BRI as well as the concept of third market cooperation. We conduct a qualitative content analysis focusing on the communiqués and the list of deliverables of the Belt and Road Forums in 2017 and 2019. Some first conclusions signal that companies are perceived as facilitators for policy goals and that business potentials for non-Chinese companies can be found in different constellations and sectors.

The workshop was jointly organized by the Institute of Statistics, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the ESB Business School of Reutlingen University. It aimed at exchanging research on economic and business topics on the development of Sub-Saharan African markets. The workshop concentrated on topics such as participation in global value chains, determinants of business growth, sales and marketing, and supply chain management. Researchers had the chance to present their current work with a subsequent discussion. The whole workshop was sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
